Re: Eliminating tax credits for ITIN filers should be part of the payroll tax cut extension.
To: U.S. Senator Mrs. Barbara Boxer
Democrats and Republicans have agreed that this nation needs to extend the payroll tax break for working Americans. To pay for it, Congress can eliminate billions of dollars inrefundable tax credits given to illegal immigrants who file using ITINs. Please ask your colleagues on the conference committee to include this provision.
Illegal workers hold jobs that should be filled by citizens and legal immigrants. It is completely irresponsible for the federal government to subsidize this illegal activity by sending these payments under the Additional Child Tax Credit program.
Other programs, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, specify that the refunds can go only to households in which the wage earner has a Social Security number. Congress must close the loophole with child tax credits.
The current policy simply encourages more illegal immigration. The Treasury Departmentinspector general noted that these tax credits are “an additional incentive for aliens to enter, reside and work in the United States without authorization, which contradicts federal law….”
The tax dollars of American workers are subsidizing illegal workers who compete with them. Please ask Senators on the conference committee to eliminate this provision.
